Transition from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) is something every member and their family will experience at some point in their career. In preparation for the transition journey, it’s important that members consider what they will do next, and are informed about all the options available to them.
Defence encourages all ADF members, their families and loved ones, to attend an ADF Member and Family Transition Seminar at regular intervals throughout their career. To ensure members receive current advice, last year Defence made it mandatory for ADF members to attend a Transition Seminar within the 12 months prior to their transition. Transition Seminars provide the most succinct and comprehensive way of understanding all of the services and benefits on offer.
Seminars are now one-day events which are somewhat tailored to the individual. There are presentations run concurrently to allow members and their families to select the presentation that most suits their needs. Members will learn about the transition process, listen to subject matter experts, and hear first-hand experiences from previously transitioned members. Navy, Army and Air Force representatives are present at all seminars to discuss the transition options available, including the option to move to flexible full-time and part-time patterns of service.
These events are a great opportunity for members to speak with representatives who are on hand to provide information on coaching services, career transition modules, superannuation, DVA claims etc. Further information and networking opportunities are available on the seminar’s exhibition floor where Defence, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Commonwealth Super Corporation, education providers, Ex-Service Organisations and other Government providers who can provide advice and support on the services they offer.
Seminars are relevant to all, not just those who are starting (or already in) their transition journey. Attending a seminar is a way for ADF members and families to educate themselves on the supports that are available to them.
As everyone’s transition journey is unique, members and their families can choose to register for a transition seminar event that suits their own availability and needs. There are three formats including:
- Face-to-face seminar
- Virtual live day interactive seminar
- Virtual static access (not interactive) seminar.
With Transition Seminars scheduled at all major cities as well as regional areas near major Defence bases throughout the year. The schedule is published on the www.defence.gov.au/transition website. The virtual seminars are accessible from anywhere in the world and offer a combination of interactive days and access to a static online platform. Interactive sessions are available during the virtual live days and members have access to the virtual static platform for the full month they have registered.
