Gateway to strengthening maritime security

Gateway to strengthening maritime security

Operation Gateway is a demonstration of Australia’s commitment to regional security and stability in the south-east Asia region.

This collaborative effort between Australia and Malaysia underscores a longstanding military relationship embedded in shared values and mutual interests, aligning with the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signed in 2021.

The operation, which involves regular maritime awareness patrols in areas of the North Indian Ocean and South China Sea, exemplifies Australia’s National Defence Strategy.

Central to Operation Gateway are personnel from RAAF Base Edinburgh, 92 Wing’s 11 Squadron who operate and maintain the P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft – the P-8A monitors merchant and naval shipping, providing critical data for operational decision-making.

Officer Commanding 92 Wing Detachment Alpha Squadron Leader Andrew Bartlett said the crews were dedicated to building a strong partnership with their Malaysian counterparts.

“Through our joint efforts, we not only enhance our operational capabilities but also strengthen the bonds of friendship and trust that have developed over many years,” he said.

“With initiatives like this, both countries are better positioned to understand potential threats and contribute to a secure and stable environment in the region.”

As both nations face evolving regional challenges, the continuous enhancement of their defence partnership remains crucial.

During his visit to Operation Gateway, Deputy Chief of Joint Operations for the ADF Major General Hugh McAslan said Operation Gateway enhanced regional security through the provision of maritime domain awareness, training, serials, exercises, intelligence and information sharing.

“Joint patrols provide Australia and Malaysia with an understanding of not only naval shipping, but also of commercial shipping in an area that is fundamental to the prosperity and security of both nations and the wider region,” he said.

“The legacy of the Malaysia-Australia Joint Defence Program, which has spanned four decades, has paved the way for future cooperation, ensuring that both nations remain agile and responsive to the dynamic geopolitical landscape.”

The foundation laid by Operation Gateway and the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will play a vital role in continuing to shape the defence strategies of both countries focused on regional peace and stability.
